US Trade Ambassador Shea to WTO: China’s approach is causing serious harm to US
Reuters reports comments by the US Trade Ambassador Dennis Shea, as tells the World Trade Organisation (WTO) that China pursues "an array of non-market industrial policies and other unfair competitive practices" aimed at supporting its domestic industries while restricting foreign companies.
Tells WTO meeting that it "maintains one of the world's most open trade regimes that is firmly based in the rule of law and that is an engine for global growth".
Tells WTO that Washington seeks trade liberalisation and deeper ties with countries which share its commitment to "fair market competition and reciprocity".
It is raising serious concerns at WTO with "the fundamental challenge posed by China's state-led, mercantilist approach to the economy and trade".
China’s approach is causing serious harm to the United States and many other WTO members and their companies and workers, this is "incompatible" with WTO.
Rejects criticism by some of US approach as "unilateralist and protectionist".
"Reforms are necessary for the continued viability" of WTO, Washington will be at forefront of efforts.
