US initial jobless claims climbed to 277K last week

FXStreet (Mumbai) - The US labor department data released on Thursday showed the first time applications for unemployment benefits inched up faster than expected last week, although overall claims stayed low indicating steady improvement in the labor market.

Four week average stays at one-month low

The initial jobless claims rose by 10,000 to 267,000 in the week ended Sept. 26, compared to the expected rise to 272K . The four-week average of claims, which provides a more accurate picture of the Labor market strength, edged lower by 1000 to a seasonally adjusted 270,500, the Labor Department said.

Meanwhile, 2.19 million people fell under continuing claims category, in the seven days ended Sept. 19. That was down 53,000 from the prior week and marked the lowest level since November 2000.
